Mahmoud Abdelgalil

Principal Investigator · Assistant Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University at Buffalo (SUNY)

Mahmoud Abdelgalil leads a research group in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University at Buffalo. His research develops geometric and stochastic methods for the control of autonomous systems, with contributions to optimal mass transport and density steering, covariance steering, geometric and hybrid control, and multi-agent learning in games.

Prior to UB, he was a postdoctoral researcher in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego with Prof. Jorge I. Poveda (2023 to 2026). He received his PhD (2023) and MSc (2020) in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from UC Irvine, and his BSc (2018) in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Science and Technology at Zewail City. His recognitions include the 2023 American Control Conference Best Student Paper Award, the Henry Samueli Endowed Fellowship, and the Holmes Endowed Fellowship.

Prospective students

We are always on the lookout for motivated PhD students. Ideal candidates have a strong background in mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, differential equations), an interest in control, optimization, or learning for autonomous systems, and comfort with at least one of MATLAB, Python, or C++.

If you’re interested to join us, feel free to email a CV and a short description of your research interests to maabdelg [at] buffalo [dot] edu. Please use the subject line “[Prospective PhD Student]” and specify which of the group’s research thrusts interests you.
